When Irfan Pathan first broke through in international cricket, he was touted as the next Kapil Dev for India; such was his impact. With an ability to swing the ball and bat well lower down the order, Irfan had generated tremendous excitement in his initial years. His curly hair and boyish grin further made him the poster boy of Indian cricket within a very short span. It seemed that India had discovered a great swing and seam bowler who would go on to achieve greatness. Unfortunately, injuries and regular dips in form hindered Pathan�s progress and today, he remains an unfortunate tale of what could have been.
Born in Vadodara, Gujarat, Irfan, who grew up in an impoverished family, made his international debut at the age of just 19 on India�s tour to Australia in 2003-04 after continuous impressive performances. His seam and swing impressed many but what really got him noticed was his incredible in-swinging yorker to get Adam Gilchrist out bowled in the 4th Test at Sydney. What was special about the delivery was that it reverse swung in the air at pace and rattled the great Australian batsman�s middle and leg-stump stump. It got everyone in the world to sit up and take notice of this young Indian pacer who could make the ball talk.
